We all have some form of pendant lighting in our homes as this is the most common indoor light fixture for many homes. When we talk about pendant lighting, we are referring to a light fitting that is suspended from the ceiling by an electrical flex and has some sort of light source, i.e.light bulb and lamp shade attached at the other end. Really speaking, pendant lighting is not just one type or style of light fixture. It can refer to chandelier lighting or just plain paper globes. Both of these light fixtures fall into the very broad category of pendant lighting.
But sometimes, the rule of three is not applied. In some modern kitchens with a smaller island, there are two but larger pendant lights. The two pendants illuminate the kitchen island, and they are big enough that three pendants would already be overwhelming. The amount of light you need and the size of the pendant lights you are using trumps the rule of three or other rules.
Mini pendants are usually less than 10 inches in width, with downward facing light. Very often these are designed with a modern look and style, using brightly colored glass shades. Mini pendants are perfect for use above kitchen counters, bars, dining tables, and other small seated areas. Often, multiple single mini pendants are hung in a series of 2-5 or more. This is a very common sight in modern restaurants and bars.
Pendants are an eye catcher in it's not something you want to cut corners on when considering a purchase. There are tons of styles and configurations available today and with a little persistence, you can find just the right fixture for both your décor and your budget. An inexpensive pendant gives you what you pay for and if it wears out, replacing it can be a chore that you won't relish.
