Two
watches working well and duties such as cooking and washing up working
nicely so far.
Fishing competition between Pagerungan islanders versus the rest has
started. Traditional
versus modern lures and lines- cash prize for first team with more than
three fish
of 6 inches or more. Special prize for largest individual fish. |

Visited
by first flying fish early this morning and the fishing competition
underway - two close calls so far that got away! Also a booby (large
southern ocean bird) has hitched a ride on our flag pole for the night. |

All
going well. Getting into SE trade winds and managed over 100 miles in the
last 24 hrs. Only 2800 miles to go to the Seychelles! |

Fishing
exploits yet to bear fruit. Nearly landed a big one this morning but it
got away as it was being hauled on deck. A few wet bunks where the water
is coming in and a shortage of Indonesian coffee (apparently the 30kgs we
thought we had were not packed in the rush to leave) are the main worries
on board at the moment. |

Have
reached the SE trade winds and managed over 144 miles during the last 24
hrs. The winds have improved and we are racing along at about 6 to 7
knots. The waves are about 4m high, so the ship is rolling about a bit but
handling well. |

Major
event of the day was finding the coffee on the second search. Relief all
round. Thank goodness it had been packed as the withdrawal symptoms,
especially amongst our Indonesian colleagues and one or two of the
Westerners, would have become unbearable over the next four weeks at sea.
No fish have been caught yet but we are hopeful of better things to come. |

An
even better day today having made some 170 miles over the last 24 hours.
Sailing conditions whilst a bit choppy don't get much better for speed. |

Still
no success at the fishing competition and one lost lure but we see plenty
of flying fish so there must be plenty of fish around. Temperatures have
come off a bit as we have moved out with the trade winds and there has
been some cloud with light showers.
A nice sunset tonight as we settle down for the evening watch. moving
around below and on deck is a bit difficult as the ship is rolling quite a
bit whilst making headway at about 7 knots.
High-light of the day was Reg being made to throw his underpants over
board, as after 10 days they were becoming just a little too fruity for
his crew mates! |

A
pretty good day having made some 150 miles over the last 24 hours.
Conditions were getting potentially tricky with a few storm clouds around,
so we reduced the sail area by furling up the mizzen completely, leaving
us with just the main sail. |

Fortunately
with the main sail being very large (some 15 meters long and 7 meters
deep) and the wind directly astern of us, there has only been a small
decrease in speed to around 6 knots.
Highlight of the day has been Pontus and Dirman having their hair cut by
Niken who has provided an on-ship barbers shop.
We have just had a beautiful sunset here and the wind is picking up again.
Should make for another exciting night on the high seas. |

As
anticipated, we had an exciting night’s sailing averaging around 7-8
knots with the ship surfing over the seas. In the morning and early
afternoon (local time) the winds fell off and so the total miles covered
over the last 24 hours was a respectable 150 miles. |

The
major event on board has been the clearing out of most of the vegetables
which are going off after 10 days. So soup making and fritters have been
on the menu to use up the cabbage, beans, carrots and tomatoes. The
onions, garlic and potatoes will last for another couple of weeks but from
here on the meals are going to be more basic and relying heavily on dried
and tinned foods. Fortunately
we have over 350 kgs of rice and 1200 boxes of noodles and some 3500
litres of water, so we won’t go short of food anytime soon, even if it
is not as interesting as we have had until now. |
