Unlike the chandelier, the pendant doesn't need a long lampshade and an understated look is what to go for. With all of its advantages and eye appeal, you may be ready to head out to buy one. They are stylish, have a simple elegance, are functional and provide illumination in hard to light areas. There are some things to think about, however, before you make that purchase.
Small pendants, like mini globes, are great alternatives to installing track lighting. Their lighting is bright but less intense all around, so it is perfect for task lighting in a kitchen or other work area. Hanging small pendants in multiples allows for sufficient lighting. Make sure to hang them above eye level to prevent glare. Light will either be directed up or down, depending on the shape or type of shade used. Pendants that are inverted will stream light to the ceiling.
For this same reason, though, bowl pendants should always be hung higher than eye level to keep from looking directly into the open top. They are not recommended for area near staircases and balconies because of this. Drum pendants are becoming a popular new style as well. They are used extensively in modern homes and contemporary business settings. Drum pendants are a short cylinder shaped "drum", usually covered in fabric or metal, closed on the bottom and top sides, and hung from a stem or cord.
Sometimes, pendants are an excellent way to incorporate some interest and colour. Fancy, pretty, and/or colourful pendants over an island can become the focal point of a kitchen, especially if the room is neutral. Sometimes, pendants are not really pendants at all. In few kitchens there are articulated arm lamps mounted over the side of the island, and provide effective and flexible task lighting.
