The
Royal Geographical Society

Calling all schools...
are YOU willing to explore and take part in the adventure of a lifetime?

We are looking for   ' Virtual Voyagers'

Join us for the voyage and to take part
in the excitement as it happens.

We want to let people know it is happening and to attract as many schools as we can to take part. Schools who join the voyage will be helping to raise funds for the charities who are going to benefit from the experience.

Resources for use by teachers and children will be tested in schools before going out on general release. Formats for the International Pack, available to schools worldwide, will be in Microsoft Office and Softease Textease Studio Suite that is currently used predominately in the UK.

INTRODUCTION:

The carving of a ship was found on the side of the Borobudur Temple in Indonesia.

The relief showed a trading ship from the 8th century, which was the kind of craft which sailed across the Indian Ocean, forming commercial links with the east coast of Africa and Madagascar.

There is even a suggestion that ships like these sailed around the Cape Of Good Hope and up to the west coast of Africa.

Philip Beale, the expedition organizer, thought of the idea to build a replica of the ship using traditional methods and to sail in it to Africa. In all, this would be a journey of over 10,000 miles in a vessel that is really not much more than a big canoe with outriggers.
The voyage began in August and will take about four months to complete.  We are being given the rights to all the educational resource material from the voyage and are making a series of resources for schools that would enable children to follow the voyage. They would be virtual sailors, being able to map the route as it happens and learn all about the conditions on board and on the sea.

Schools will receive weekly information packs and will also be able to contact the ship by email. It is hoped that there might even be a phone link but this has yet to be arranged.

We want to help raise money with the crew for the expedition's nominated charities and so we are inviting schools to join us for the voyage and then have the resources we create later for future use as a cross-curricular pack. There is an enormous amount of learning potential to be had from this voyage and we hope that you will want to sail with us from the start.
We are IT tutors to schools, teachers and ex Head teachers with many years experience in Primary education and Advisory Teacher work. We would like to welcome you on board as soon as possible.  Our contact details are below.

Virtual Voyager  ~ the cross-curricular learning resources project for schools.

We are creating a cross-curricular teaching and learning resource pack beginning with the 'Virtual Voyager' pack.
If you join us, your children will be able to follow the Borobudur ship as it travels across the Indian and Atlantic Oceans and play the sailing simulation game. We are collecting data including temperature of the sea and the air as well as light levels, wind speed and journal accounts from the crew.

The Valiant Data Logger being used on the voyage will be available to schools at a discount.

We will also be running a Sea Poetry Conversation which children might like to follow as their Literacy exercise each week.

Once the voyage is over, we will be sending out resources on Textease complete with training notes for exploiting the software more effectively. If your school sails with us, you will have the resource pack at no extra cost as well as free training for Textease Studio Suite.  . A portion of the funds raised goes to the nominated charities of the expedition.

THE VIRTUAL VOYAGER PACK

The Education Pack is a presentation CD with worksheets attached that children can use to follow the voyage and keep up to date with regular email packs and reference to the website. It is a cross-curricular pack, which can be used for KS 1 and KS2. There are issues suitable for the KS 3 syllabus as well.

The pack consists of:

  1. Presentation CD detailing the voyage

  2. Route Plotting programme enabling pupils to follow the voyage

  3. Spreadsheets for Ocean Profile and data collection of  environmental measurements

  4. Pictures of the ship for display

  5. A compass Rose

  6. Chart sections and information from the Hydrographical Office with special copy right exception

This is supplied in a plastic file with a CD insert.

Schools that work through the Virtual Voyager Pack will be helping to create the Borobudur Pack. Voyager schools will have these packs at no extra cost. The £75 paid for the Virtual pack helps to cover the costs and to support the nominated charities.

The Borobudur Packs will go on general sale through educational publishers and a royalty paid to the Expedition funds for charity support.

Below are JPEG examples of the:
Spreadsheet of environmental data and
Line graph of the Ocean Depth along the route.
